A group of Suffolk workers were honored in Patchogue today after making a unique discovery earlier this year.

In a post-Hurricane Sandy cleanup effort at the Patchogue Beach Club, workers stumbled across a message in a bottle among the rubble and debris.

The message was written by Sidonie Fery 10 years ago, when she was 10 years old. The message read, "Be excellent to yourself, dude," a quote from the movie "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure." Along with the quote was also a phone number.

Parks Department worker Brian Waldron decided to call the number and reached Fery's mother, Mimi, in Manhattan. As it turned out, Fery was tragically killed three years ago when she fell from a cliff in Switzerland.

Fery's mother said it was overwhelming to receive the message that her daughter had tossed into the ocean while visiting some friends.

Today, the Village of Patchogue held a special ceremony in memory of Fery and unveiled a plaque in her honor.

To honor Fery's love of art, her mother made coffee mugs baring the message and sold them at the ceremony. All of the proceeds will go to the Village of Patchogue art program.
