A memorial was held Tuesday in Mineola to honor the 38 Nassau police officers who have died in the line of duty.
During the memorial, a special tribute was paid to Lt. Michael Shea and Officer Brian Abbondandelo, who recently passed away from 9/11-related illnesses.
"Today, we pledge our promise to you," said Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. "To never forget our fallen, and it's just as important to never forget their families."
Nassau police also plan to dedicate a new park to the families of the fallen officers.
