The hate crimes unit is investigating Monday after a day laborer in Medford was seriously hurt by a hit-and-run driver.
Police say the victim was run down Sunday morning on County Road 83 near the Long Island Expressway service road. Investigators say the car drove onto a sidewalk, traveled for 70 feet, then hit the victim and never stopped. The victim is hospitalized with head injuries.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy issued a statement Monday saying, ?If it is determined that this victim was struck intentionally Suffolk County will prosecute the perpetrator to the fullest extent of all applicable laws.?
Immigrant advocate Rev. Allan Ramirez has no doubt the driver hit the individual on purpose.
"It is quite obvious that someone who goes for 70 feet off the path at 8 o'clock was not driving around in such a way because they were intoxicated...It is clearly something that was targeted at a particular group of people," Ramirez says.
Police are urging the driver to turn him or herself in.
Investigators are searching for a gray or silver late-model foreign sedan with possible damage to the windshield and are soliciting the help of body shops in the search. Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk police?s Hate Crimes unit at 631-852-6323.
