One local organization is offering help for the homeless as Long Island continues to be hit with frigid temperatures.

Maureen's Haven, based in Riverhead, is giving dozens of homeless Long Islanders a place to have a meal and a warm bed. Tracy Lutz, the executive director of Maureen's Haven, says last year two of her previous guests lost their lives because they were too ill to make it in for help.

Lutz says because it is so brutal outside, those who would usually be turned away for not following the rules of the shelter will be allowed in.

According to the Department of Social Services, the number of homeless in 2011 was 1,946 and in 2012 it was more than 2,500.
