A man is fighting for his life after a two-car crash in Massapequa Wednesday afternoon.

Police say a Volkswagen driving south on Broadway collided with an eastbound Mercedes around 1:40 p.m.

They say the Volkswagen jumped the curb and slammed into a 47-year-old man, who was walking on the sidewalk near Ontario Avenue.

At this time, it is not clear what caused the collision.

News 12 Long Island is told that the victim suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to the hospital. He is listed in critical condition.

Nicolette Vertuccio, of Massapequa, says she watched in horror as police and paramedics rushed to the scene.

“I'm not sure if he was conscious,” she says. “He wasn't saying anything. He was bleeding profusely.”

Residents and workers in the area say that Broadway is often used as a speedway.

“This is the third or fourth accident in the last two or three years. Now with a pedestrian, it's just unsafe,” says Massapequa resident Jason Pachucki.

Investigators say that both drivers remained on the scene. No charges have been filed.

Due to the severity of the crash, the Nassau Homicide Squad has taken over the investigation.
