A Manhattan man has been indicted in the fatal shooting of an off-duty police officer who went to East New York to buy a vehicle last month.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez says 38-year-old Randy Jones is being held without bail. He faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of the top count.
Officer Adeed Fayaz went with his brother-in-law on Feb. 4 to purchase a vehicle for $24,000 off Facebook Marketplace. Jones allegedly advertised the vehicle and set up the meetup, pulled a gun on Fayaz and demanded money. When Fayaz and his brother-in-law told the defendant they did not have the money, he allegedly shot Fayaz in the head and fled. The brother-in-law grabbed Fayaz’s gun and engaged in an exchange of shots before Jones fled the scene.
Fayaz was taken to Brookdale Hospital and was pronounced dead on Feb. 7. On that same day, police apprehended Jones in a Rockland County hotel.
Jones will make his next appearance in court on May 17. He faces charges of first- and second-degree murder, first-degree attempted robbery, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree robbery and third-degree grand larceny.
