Manhasset School District officials say students are passing around a stolen confidential memo that was posted to the dark web in a ransomware attack last month.
The memo included social security numbers and driver's license numbers.
"It means it's out there, so anyone can actually access the dark web," says Adam Schwam, of Sandwire Technology Group. "But once they access the dark web, they could pull that information and make it public and what does it mean? It means now everyone has access to it, other students, parents, matter of fact, even strangers."
The district says students who possess and circulate stolen files are violating the district's code of conduct and may face disciplinary action.
