In his first public appearance since sexting allegations surfaced, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano denied sending lewd messages to a Hauppauge-based marketing executive.
Mangano's comments refer to alleged sexual text messages that were sent to Karin Caro, an executive at BluChip Marketing. Mangano says his cellphone was "spoofed," or hacked, and that he never sent the messages.
A "copy and paste" of those texts appeared briefly on Caro's Twitter account, which she says was also hacked.
BluChip Marketing received no-bid contracts from the county in 2013 and 2014 for Parks Department event planning. Democrats in the Nassau Legislature have formally asked the Mangano administration to release further details into the contract.
Mangano spoke to reporters at a heroin task force summit in Baldwin.
"It's someone that's out there getting their jollies. Taking down a public official, we're vulnerable, you're in the public spotlight. And this is some sick, warped individual. And you're all helping them all get a real hearty laugh," Mangano said to reporters.
Mangano told News 12 that he has "never sexted."
No formal police report has been filed in relation to recent phone hacking claims by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, according to Nassau Commissioner Thomas Krumpter. However, Krumpter told News 12 that it's common practice not to file one in "sensitive" cases.
Krumpter further explained that when a police report is filed, anyone in the department has access to it in the computer system. He says this case was given an "investigative number" so that only the investigators on the case can view it.
