Mangano delivers State of the County address
Nassau Executive Ed Mangano delivered his sixth State of the County address Wednesday night from the ice rink at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.
He touched on many issues including keeping younger residents from moving away and the project to renew the Nassau Coliseum.
Mangano says he plans to address Long Island's high cost of living by bringing businesses and jobs to the county. He highlighted the upcoming renovation of Nassau Coliseum into a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment complex. The project is expected to create 2,700 jobs and bring an estimated $10 billion in revenue for the county.
Mangano also announced plans to build a corporate office and practice facility for the New York Islanders in Hicksville all while the team is slated to move to Brooklyn next season.
"This facility will cement the Islanders in Nassau and provide hope that we will witness their full-time return when they see the magnificent new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum," said Mangano.
The executive also announced that the county will sell 5 acres on the southwest side of the Nassau Coliseum to Memorial Sloan Kettering. The cancer center plans to build a $140 million outpatient treatment and research facility at the Uniondale site.
"Sloan Kettering will bring 250,000 good paying jobs with an average salary of $150,000 a year," he said.
Mangano said another way to keep professionals from leaving the Long Island is increasing affordable housing opportunities.
"More than 3,500 new apartments have opened or are under construction in our county with more than 1,000 units being constructed through our initiative to convert vacant office space into apartments near transit centers," said Mangano.
