A man who had exited a vehicle was fatally struck on the Long Island Expressway early Sunday morning.
It happened in the eastbound lanes near Exit 58 in the Hauppauge area around 5 a.m.
Police say Jonathan Nieto-Carrillo, 27, of Hampton Bays, had exited a 2004 Nissan vehicle that was pulled over on the shoulder. He was struck by a 2008 Mazda, driven by 39-year-old Justin Wishnevsky, of Ridge.
Nieto-Carrillo was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Wishnevsky was uninjured.
Eastbound lanes on the highway were shut down as police investigated at the scene.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and police say their investigation is continuing. No charges have been filed at this time.
