A Hempstead resident has been sentenced to 24 years to life in prison for robbing and murdering a man as he slept in his car.

Prosecutors say Kadeem Lewis shot Jose Sanchez Velasquez in the chest then stole his phone in 2019.

Lewis and another man were looking for a home to break into when the attack occurred, according to authorities.

Lewis was found guilty in October.
