The man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend in the driveway of her New Cassel home was sentenced to 23 years to life in prison for the murder.
Prosecutors say 34-year-old Marlon Fann had previously served time in prison for slashing 23-year-old Merline Port-Louis before he killed her last June. Port-Louis had an order of protection against Fann and had been issued a panic button to call for help in the event he showed up. A chilling audiotape of Port-Louis? final moments, which included her pleas for help and the gunshots that followed, was played during the trial.
Huguette Port-Louis, Merline?s mother, has filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Nassau County. She says police constantly assured her daughter she would be safe, but did not provide the necessary protection. Huguette is now raising her 4-year-old granddaughter Jasmine.
