What began as a typical morning commute Thursday for a Northport man quickly took a detour, and it was all caught on camera.
Todd Brush was driving on 25A in St. James when he spotted a deer in distress. The animal was entangled in a soccer net on the fields at Harbor Country Day School.
"I just figured I gotta do something,' says Brush.
Brush grabbed a utility knife from his truck and began cutting into the net to free the deer's antlers. The animal put up a fight though.
"I started cutting, and he would jump around and then he would start jumping around again and eventually he got his feet stuck in the net and got stuck on his side," says Brush. "That's when I kind of jumped on top of him and grabbed his antlers, held the antler with one hand and started cutting with the other hand and then I had to switch."
Video shows how strong the deer was as it frantically thrashed around. It actually lifted the posts of the goal off the ground.
After a 14-minute struggle, Brush was finally able to set the deer free.
"I was so excited when he got up and ran away," says Brush. "I knew he wasn't injured."
The incident left a hole in the school's soccer net so Brush sent an email to school officials explaining what happened and offered to pay for a new one.
The school superintendent responded and said not to worry about it.
