A house fire in Bay Shore killed a 62-year-old man Thursday night, police say.
Police say Curley Tutt, who lived in a basement apartment on Grant Avenue, died in the fire around 10:20 p.m.
Police say multiple families lived in the single-story home. The other adults and children living there all made it out safely. One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.
Investigators say they think the fire started in the basement.
The fire does not appear to be criminal, but town officials say the homeowner will be ticketed for subdividing the home into multiple apartments and altering the basement without a permit.
The town declined to say whether it had previously found the home to have any safety violations.
