Evan Marshall was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years to life in prison for the killing and dismembering his Glen Cove neighbor and for running over a pedestrian before the murder.
Marshall, 32, pleaded guilty to murder, assault and other charges in September for the August 2006 murder. He said he was searching for money to buy drugs when he confronted Denice Fox, 57, and repeatedly stabbed her.
When police arrested Marshall, they found Fox?s head in his car trunk and her body parts in Marshall?s mother?s basement.
Marshall expressed remorse on the way to prison after the sentencing. "I'm not a monster. I feel terrible about this and I will do anything I can the rest of my life to try and fix this," he said.
The Fox family objected to the plea deal of 25 years for the murder, but Judge Richard LaPera said he was convinced the first-degree murder charge wouldn't have survived an appeal. The judge recommended that Marshall, who was also sentenced to five years for striking the pedestrian, remain in prison without parole after serving the full 30 years.
That did little to appease the Fox family.
"This is a sick guy who's been sick all of his life and who should never be allowed to be on the street," said Jay Fox, the victim's husband.
"I have so much more to live," said Rebecca Fox, the victim's daughter. "Now, my life is based on keeping somebody in prison."
