A man is dead after he was struck by a Suffolk County police cruiser Saturday night.
Police say 54-year-old Craig Schiffer, of East Meadow, was struck at around 10:30 p.m. as he was crossing Main Street in Islip with his wife. The two had just come out of Treme Jazz Club, officials say.
Schiffer was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead. His wife was not injured.
Police say the vehicle was occupied by two officers, who were traveling eastbound to respond to a 911 call at the time of the incident.
A witness says the officers stopped and immediately got out of their vehicle to help the victim. The witness says the officers performed CPR until EMT workers arrived at the scene.
The police car has been impounded for a safety check. No charges have been filed.
Officials say they are still investigating the incident. Part of the investigation will focus on whether the cruiser had on its lights and siren when the incident happened.
Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
