A man is dead and a woman is in critical condition following a shooting in Westbury.

The shooting occurred inside a home on Waterbury Lane Saturday night.

Police say the woman, 72-year-old Maxine Washington, was found with two gunshot wounds to the back. Her husband, 74-year-old James Washington, also had gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The exact circumstances and motive of the shooting remain unclear.

Neighbors were shocked by the gun violence in their street. Several residents on the block described the couple as happy, pleasant and content.

One neighbor told News 12 that James Washington was in remission after being treated for cancer.

Friends say the couple has a son.
