A Brooklyn man is facing charges for allegedly selling fake inspection stickers on the website Letgo.

Octavian Ocasio was arrested in Lynbrook Tuesday. Police say possession or sale of inspection stickers is a class D felony, punishable by up to seven years in prison.

Ocasio pleaded not guilty in Mineola Wednesday, and was released on bail.

The arrest brings to light what mechanics and AAA say is dangerous idea: skipping legal safety checks to avoid a costly repair or to save time.

"We worry that people who are taking advantage of these real or counterfeit inspection stickers, have vehicles that are in some way compromised as far as safety is concerned," says Robert Sinclair, of AAA New York.

Last October, police discovered dozens of forged inspection stickers at the Babylon train station parking lot. Two weeks ago, police say someone stole real inspection stickers from a Bay Shore Chevy dealership.

Suffolk police are asking anyone with information about the inspection sticker theft in Bay Shore to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
