Man and companion dog fatally struck by a car in Island Park

A man and his canine companion are dead after a car struck them Saturday night in Island Park.

Nassau police say it happened just before 9 p.m. at the intersection of Austin Boulevard and Saratoga Boulevard.

Detectives say the 42-year-old man was walking his dog when a Mercedes struck them.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The 27-year-old driver stayed at the scene.
