A man accused in a fatal hit-and-run in Miller Place is facing new charges related to the incident.
Christopher Campbell was charged in the death of Tracy Mangino in Miller Place back in 2014. Mangino was walking on North Country Road when prosecutors say she was hit by a truck that never stopped. She was just 100 feet from her home.
Campbell was arraigned Tuesday on a new indictment, which includes updated charges of vehicular manslaughter, DWI and driving without a valid license.
Campbell's defense attorney George Duncan says his client is innocent of all the charges. He says they were ready to go to trial last week to prove it, and that they were blindsided by the new charges.
"I've never seen this in 20 years of practice," says Duncan. "I think it demonstrates the weakness in their overall case, and I think it's a desperate move at the last minute."
The district attorney's office says its case is strong and that the new charges are based on new testimony from more than one witness. The office would not elaborate on the details regarding the new witness testimony.
Campbell remains free on $100,000 bond.
