Opponents of an upscale mall planned in Syosset announced Thursday their idea for an alternative development.
The 39-acre former Cerro Wire site has been in dispute for more than 12 years. Taubman Company, which owns the site, wants to build an 860,000-square-foot mall, but must wait for a judge's approval after residents filed suit to stop the project.
"The environmental impact would be horrendous," said Jericho resident Richard Turkisher.
Instead, opponents introduced a mixed-use development that would have up to 500 condo-style housing units, office and retail shops and a hotel.
Taubman, meanwhile, repeated its stance of having no intention to build anything on the property except a mall.
