Long Island's oldest theater will soon return as a venue for entertainment.

The long dormant 144-year-old Vail-Leavitt Theater in Riverhead was purchased by the Jazz Loft and will soon be brought back to life as a community arts and education hub after a major restoration.

"You see the architecture from the style back in the 1800s," Riverhead Town Supervisor Tim Hubbard said. "The amazing molding, the amazing wood that's in here, and we sold it to an entity that's going to restore it, keep it as is, and provide beautiful music here for downtown Riverhead."

Hubbard joined Jazz Loft founder and President Thomas Manuel and other Riverhead Town officials on Wednesday for the contract signing for the purchase of the theater.

To help with the restoration, the Rotary Club of Riverhead donated $25,000.
