A Lynbrook man accused of driving under the influence and causing a crash that killed two people was formally charged Wednesday.
John Aniano, 25, pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges from his hospital bed in South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside.
As News 12 has reported, police say Aniano was speeding in a Mercedes Benz on Sunrise Highway Tuesday when he violently struck a Toyota from behind. Two people in the Toyota were killed - John Jones and his common-law wife Sharon Long, of Lynbrook.
According to court documents, Aniano was "disoriented," "lethargic" and "not making any sense" after the crash. Police say they found two prescription pill bottles at the scene. The documents also say that Ariano told officers at the hospital, "I took my meds...I had a glass of wine and smoked marijuana. I only took the Seroquel."
A spokesperson for the Nassau District Attorney's Office says Aniano is being held on $500,000 bail. He is due in court next week.
