More than 1 million unemployed residents in the U.S. may soon lose long-term benefits.

Benefits for 1.3 million long-term unemployed people will expire just three days after Christmas.

Democrats are pushing for legislation to give federally paid benefits to jobless people after their 26 weeks of state benefits run out. The legislation would allow people to keep collecting those benefits for an additional 14 weeks.

The Congressional Budget Office says the extension would stimulate the economy by .2% next year and create 200,000 jobs. It also says the extension would cost $25 billion.
