LGBTQ leaders on Long Island are speaking out about the deadly shooting that occurred in a Colorado Springs gay night club.
On Saturday night, authorities say Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, opened fired in Club Q, killing five and injuring 25 others before being subdued by patrons and arrested.
The LGBT Network in Hauppauge says they have been on high alert since news broke of the horrific incident.
“Once again, we wake up to another shooting that is killing our community members, simply because of hate,” said David Kilmnick of the LGBT Network.
Kilmnick says he is in contact with police and has been assured that patrols will be stepped up at all LGBTQ locations and events in the area. This includes the LGBT Network’s upcoming Transgender Day of Remembrance events.
“It doesn’t matter if you are LGBT or not, this is not something that is acceptable. This is not something that is normal,” he said.
Several LGBTQ bars on Long Island tell News 12 that they are increasing internal security as well.
