Long Island's first case of enterovirus D68 found in North Hempstead
Nassau health officials have confirmed the first Long Island case of enterovirus D68 in the town of North Hempstead.
Officials say a young girl was hospitalized with the respiratory virus that has struck hundreds of children across the United States. They say she is now recovering at home.
Mild symptoms may include fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing and body and muscle aches. In children with asthma, it can cause wheezing.
The virus spreads from person to person when an infected person coughs, sneezes or touches contaminated surfaces.
Nassau Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein says in most cases, enterovirus is a mild summer cold.
Doctors recommend washing hands with soap and water often, especially after changing diapers. They also urge parents to disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs.
County health officials are also urging parents to avoid sending sick children to school and other public places.
