Long Island residents are heading out of their homes as heat wave temperatures continue to rise Monday.
Many are visiting local beaches and pools to cool off, while others are turning to the government to provide relief. Suffolk County officials say cooling centers will be opened at the three community college campuses in Brentwood, Selden and Riverhead. Nassau has no plans to open up county-run recreational cooling centers, but officials recommend people head to air-conditioned senior citizen centers, libraries and malls to beat the heat.
Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) says he has been pushing for cooling centers for the past four years and doesn?t think Nassau?s plan is adequate.
