Long Islanders joined the nation Monday in remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.Hundreds gathered at Hempstead Town Hall for the 14th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade, followed by a short service. One woman said the parade was reminiscent of marches held when Dr. King was still alive.King would have turned 78 Monday if he was still alive. He was assassinated as he stood on the balcony of a Memphis, Tennessee hotel on April 4, 1968. His widow, Coretta Scott King, founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change shortly after his death. She died last year at age 78.
