Thousands of people laced up their shoes and walked at Jones Beach State Park for a breast cancer cure.
Women and men, some wearing pink shirts, walked in the American Cancer Society's 14th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. According to the group, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes ? that's 2,300 women on Long Island alone.
"This is a moment I've been waiting for because last year, I could hardly walk," said cancer survivor Anna Schmitt, of Farmingville. "Finally, this year, I can do it and I'm ecstatic."Young Danny Brennan, of Plainview, dyed his hair pink in support of his mother's recent breast cancer diagnosis.Organizers said 50,000 people participated and they raised $2.7 million for research. Informational booths were set up for walkers.
