Long Islanders pounded the pavement today to raise awareness about being sun smart.
It marked the 10th annual Miles for Melanoma Walk/Run, and it was held at Eisenhower Park.
Today's event was held in memory in Colette Coyne, who died 15 years ago of the disease at just 29 years old. Her mother, also Colette, has made melanoma awareness and prevention her mission.
To protect yourself, doctors say you should avoid peak hours of sunlight, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. When outside, you should always wear sunblock that is at least SPF 30.
Doctors add that early prevention is key, and anything new or changing on your skin that looks suspicious should be examined.
