Long Islanders are expressing mixed reactions to President Bush?s plan to send National Guard troops to shore up the U.S.-Mexico border.
Retired Air National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Dave Ruvola says a lot is being asked of the National Guard. Ruvola wouldn?t comment on how thinly stretched the ranks are, but he says there is no question the guard and reserve have been used more and more in recent times.
Teobaldo Conrado, a Colombian immigrant living on Long Island for 25 years, says he likes the idea of ID cards for immigrants known as "guest workers." Conrado says immigrants trying to make a living should be given a chance, while those committing crimes should be deported.
