Long Islanders are doing their part to help those devastated by the epic flooding in Texas from Hurricane Harvey.
Harvey Schaffler, with the New York Blood Center, says they are shipping blood donations every day to help with the ongoing crisis.
"Products have been going steadily to the blood center in the Texas area," Schaffler tells News 12 Long Island.
Others are donating money and food. The Diocese of Rockville Centre announced a special collection at all its parishes for the next two weekends.
Island Harvest is currently gathering donations that will be trucked directly to affected areas near Houston. President and CEO Randi Shubin Dresner says the organization is looking for items with a pop-top to help those who may not have access to a can opener.
She says donations of personal care items, such as diapers, tooth paste and toilet paper, would be helpful. She also suggests donating foods like granola bars, peanut butter and soups.
Island Harvest is coordinating with Feeding America to disperse the donated items to their affiliates. Once enough donations are assembled, they will be leaving Long Island and heading south to help the victims.
