Long Islanders flooded hardware stores Sunday to stock up on supplies as forecasters warned a deadly snowstorm is barreling toward the East Coast.
Lew Cohen, of Alper's Hardware in Port Washington, says he's sold about 75 percent of his inventory. Popular items include salt, snow blowers and shovels. Shoppers told News 12 Long Island they aren't taking any chances after the Valentine's Day storm that crippled transportation and power grids.
Hempstead officials say they're also bracing for the worst and have crews on standby. The town plans to spray a glue-like substance that's meant to keep roads ice-free for up to 12 hours. Workers say they're grateful for the chance at overtime during the mild winter.
