Residents across Long Island are bracing for another heat wave expected to spike temperatures in the 90s this weekend.
Many residents say they are concerned about the possibility of severe power outages like the ones that affected Queens last week. Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Chairman Richard Kessel says Long Island is in good shape as scorching days approach. He says LIPA power lines are designed differently than the ones in New York City, with 80 percent of them above ground. According to Kessel, underground power lines are subject to more heat and are more difficult to repair.
Many residents say they are still stocking up on extra supplies just in case. Retailers say emergency generators are also a hot seller after 100,000 Long Islanders temporarily lost power during the last heat wave.
