Residents and some officials were busy ?greening? the Island Tuesday by recycling, planting and reducing carbon footprints in celebration of Earth Day.
Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi spent the day planting trees with county workers in Roosevelt. Suozzi says the county will plant 2,008 trees this year and spend almost $1 million on the project.
LIPA is reimbursing the county $50 for every power line-friendly tree planted. Suozzi also signed legislation requiring the county use only ?green? products.
In Garden City, AAA workers rounded up old or used car batteries for recycling. AAA says it accepts used batteries all year round.
Over in Farmingdale, Congressman Steve Israel took a ride in one of the SUNY school?s new electric powered cars.
