A Northport teen is the favorite to bring home a gold medal in the 1,500-meter race as a first-time Paralympic athlete.
Mikey Brannigan, who graduated from Northport High School last year, will run in the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Brannigan, who has autism, will run in the 1,500-meter race as the reigning world champion at the Paralympic level.
Because of his learning disabilities, Brannigan could not get high-enough SAT or ACT scores to be accepted to colleges, despite receiving offers from some of the best teams in the country.
Instead, he runs for the New York Athletic Club.
Brannigan and his coach, Sonya Robinson, says the goal four years from now is to make the Olympics and the 2024 games as well.
The Paralympic Games will be held from Sept. 7 to 18.
