Animal rights groups are gearing up for an increase of rescues, saying that after Easter, unwanted animals given as gifts for the holiday usually get dumped in area ponds and parks.
Ducks, chicks and rabbits may be cute, but John Di Leonardo from Long Island Orchestrating for Nature says they actually don't make good pets.
Each year, his organization is called to rescue lots of unwanted animals that were given as gifts around this time of year.
He says domesticated animals are a long-time commitment and are not just gifts. He also says they should never be abandoned where humans can't take care of them.
Animal Rescue groups recommend if you have already purchased an animal as a gift, to not abandon it; rather contact experts on how you can care for the animal properly.
