Community members across Long Island marked the 75 anniversary of D-Day on Thursday by honoring veterans who served.
On June 6, 1944, the Allies landed more than 150,000 troops on the Nazi-occupied beaches of Normandy. About 100 World War II Veterans and three D-Day heroes were recognized by New York State for their service at the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University.
Frank DePergola and Phillip DiMarco were awarded the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross, and Charles Cino received the New York State Medal for Merit.
D-Day Veteran Julian Binetti, now 99 years old, attended a ceremony in Old Bethpage and honored the soldiers, sailors and airmen who never came home:
Some D-Day veterans said that this could be the last big commemoration of that historic day that they'll see as the number of surviving veterans shrinks.
