A Long Island ER nurse is taking her lifesaving skills to Haiti to make sure orphans don't go hungry.

Nina Ng is the assistant director of nursing at Syosset Hospital.

When she takes off for a vacation, instead of heading for the sun and the sand, Ng heads to an orphanage in Haiti.

"It's more fulfilling, sometimes, than just going on a regular vacation," said Ng. "They're very welcoming and happy to have me there."

Ng began her trips to Haiti six years ago and says she has a special love for the children there.

Her focus has been on bringing nutritional food to the orphans. For the past several years, she sends monthly care packages of fresh food.

"Their diet is really bad. They eat a lot of rice and pasta -- just carbs -- until they are full," said Ng. "But it doesn't have the proper nutrition they should have. I'm looking to give them more vegetables and meat so they grow up to be healthy."
