A rough ride on Long Island roads Friday left multiple drivers stranded with flat tires after hitting large potholes on two major state parkways.
On the Wantagh State Parkway, a line of cars was forced to pull over Friday afternoon after several drivers struck the same large pothole. One by one, motorists got out of their vehicles to inspect the damage, many pulling jacks from their trunks to change flat tires and check their rims.
Earlier in the day, a similar situation unfolded on the Sunken Meadow State Parkway, where nearly a dozen drivers reported flat tires after hitting a pothole.
The chaotic scenes on both state parkways come about two months after Gov. Kathy Hochul praised improvements to Long Island roads during a January appearance.
“Nice ride. Didn’t have as many potholes as you used to have,” the governor said at the time. “How’s that for one billion dollars of fixing potholes on Long Island feel?”
By Friday afternoon, a crew from the New York State Department of Transportation arrived at the Wantagh State Parkway to patch the pothole.
The pothole on the Sunken Meadow State Parkway was also repaired Friday morning.
Recent pothole problems have not been limited to parkways. News12 has reported for more than a week on deteriorating road conditions across Long Island, including heavily traveled stretches of Middle Country Road in the Town of Brookhaven and New York State Route 110 in Huntington Station, along with numerous residential side streets.
Earlier this week, Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez told News12 that more than $100 million will be spent this year to repave Long Island roads.
The state Department of Transportation blamed the potholes on the winter weather.
