Around 40 member agencies are picking up turkeys and chickens for families Saturday in Hauppauge, along with the trimmings and fresh produce.
Belkis Santana, from Jesus Christ Living Ministries in Smithtown, says she will be serving the food to the church community. She says she's seeing a growing need for food in her church community because of the financial hardships brought on by the pandemic.
Long Island Cares assists more than 359 member agencies every year across the island. Agape Community Church in Mastic Beach is also experiencing an increased need in food donations.
Long Island Cares says last year, it gave out 8,000 turkeys. This year the need is up, and it's received requests for more than 12,000 turkeys.
