The Long Beach City Council voted Tuesday to toughen underage drinking laws.
Previously, an adult had to provide alcohol to a minor to be held accountable. Under the new law, however, an adult who allows an underage person to drink in his or her home could face up to 15 days in jail and a $250 fine.
Supporters of the law say it gives police another tool to prevent underage drinking. They say an adult is usually involved in most instances of underage drinking, either by providing it, selling it or just allowing it.
