Officials at Long Beach School District are pushing for a lower speed limit on Lido Boulevard.
They say they would like to see the speed limit dropped from 40 mph to 30 mph, except in school zones – where it would be dropped to 20 mph.
Superintendent David Weiss says their proposal is intended to calm traffic and create a safer atmosphere around the city's schools.
Lowering the speed limit would require the permission of Nassau County since Lido Boulevard is a county road. It would also take the full Town Board in Hempstead to vote yes on the proposal. That vote could come before the end of the year.
