Long Beach public schools will be closed for two weeks due to additional COVID-19 cases.
Long Beach schools superintendent Dr. Jennifer Gallagher announced that COVID-19 cases, many of which were in its transportation department, led to the closure.
Gallagher says the decision was made in consultation with the Nassau County Health Department to move to fully remote instruction for two weeks. Schools are due to reopen on Nov. 12.
Officials say Long Beach schools will remain as a polling location on Election Day.
Gallagher also says they will also not be able to provide transportation to non-public schools.
The district says it is working on contact tracing efforts.
Gallagher's letter does not address cases in students and would only say, "The Long Beach School District has had many COVID cases of the past six days, which has resulted in having to quarantine several students and districtwide."
On Sunday, the district released a letter detailing positive COVID-19 tests in one high school student and two middle school staff members. Gallagher said the district had nine positive cases over six days at that point, but the current figures are not known.
