A groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday for a new project aimed at protecting a seven-mile stretch of shore front in Nassau from future storms.
Sen. Charles Schumer, Rep. Peter King and local officials say the ceremonial groundbreaking for the South Shore Beach Protection Project is three years in the making, and will use $230 million in federal money.
"The project is a win-win," says Sen. Schumer. "We get our beaches protected, our communities protected if God forbid there's another Sandy."
In addition to the federal funds, 18 jetties will be repaired with new rock and four new jetties will be built.
The project also includes construction of 14-foot high sand berms from Lido Beach past Long Beach.
The Army Corps of Engineers say the entire project will be completed in four years.
