A Long Beach police pickup truck ran over two people on the beach Sunday night, officials say.
Police say that an officer accidentally drove into a 48-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman who were lying on a beach blanket around 8 p.m. near Edwards Boulevard.
Both were taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, police say. The man has broken ribs and the woman has a leg injury and broken finger.
The city's police commissioner says the officer was trying to make a 3-point turn at the time of the accident. He was moving at 5 mph or less, according to authorities.
"Unfortunately, it's a high-axle vehicle, and the people were laying prone on the beach -- very difficult to see," the commissioner says
