The City of Long Beach is giving officials the power to restrict beach access.

The city authorized its police commissioner and city manager to close or limit beach and boardwalk access without a declaration of emergency.

Thousands gathered at the beach last month for an unauthorized party where a teen was shot.

The amended code requires the authorized officials to file a memo with the city clerk to close the beach.

The City Council can override the decision.

In a statement, the City Council president said, “These measures give us the tools needed to quickly respond to any situation that threatens public safety.”
