Tens of thousands of veterans call Long Island home.
On Veterans Day, multiple local organizations came together to give them free resources.
Veterans at Tuesday's event say they worry about issues many veterans face like food insecurity and mental health struggles.
General Needs LTD gave out hats.
Long Island Cares distributed food.
"Giving everybody a brand-new, fresh military cap and it's fun to watch the expression when they get something new and they feel respected," says Lonnie Sherman, president of General Needs LTD.
Paws of War had a free mobile veterinary clinic for local veterans and their service or companion animals.
Hugh Giffords is a veterinarian for Paws of War and a veteran, so he knows what this means to other veterans.
"It's really an honor and a privilege to help people who have defended our freedom," says Hugh Giffords, with Paws of War.
Veterans say the support means everything.
But some think more resources need to be available, especially for those who are too scared to ask for help.
