Reactions poured in from elected officials all over Long Island following news that President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump have both tested positive for COVID-19.
All five members of Long Island's congressional delegation tweeted their support for both, both the three Democrats also reminded the public to wear masks and observe social distancing.
Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice wrote, "This virus does not discriminate. No matter who you are. PLEASE wear your mask, wash your hands, and do not gather in crowds."
Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks said "Even POTUS, with all the rapid testing the White House has access to, can contract the virus if not careful. If we all do our part, we can turn this corner. Wear a mask. Be safe."
Speaking from an airport on his way home from Washington, Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin wished the Trumps well.
"I hope that both the president and first lady have a speedy recovery," said Zeldin. "I've heard that he's been active, that he's been working and communicating with others via phone over the course of the day today. So that's a good sign."
Nassau Executive Laura Curran remarked that this is a reminder of how COVID-19 is still a threat, saying, "We all woke up to quite a surprise this morning. We saw in Nassau County the devastation of coronavirus, so I wish the president and the first lady a full and speedy recovery.
"We've gotten through being the epicenter of this in our country, but the president now testing positive is a reminder to all of us that it has not gone away," said Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo also sent out a statement, writing, "My thoughts are with President Trump and the First Lady and I wish them a full and speedy recovery. This virus is vicious and spreads easily. Wear a mask. Let's all look out for each other."
