Health care workers across the state walked out during their lunch Wednesday to protest Gov. Kathy Hochul's budget.
Some workers say the proposed budget includes cuts of $700 million from safety net hospitals.
Workers are calling on Hochul to include a $2.5 billion investment in health care in the budget and are also asking the state to close the Medicaid gap and increase Medicaid reimbursement rates for hospitals and nursing homes.
“Cutting Medicaid to people who need it the most, the most indigent people that don't have coverage come here or they go to other hospitals. They will not be able to come because they don't have anything,” says Rosemary Cummings, a technician at LIJ-Valley Stream Medical.
Hochul's spokesperson issued a statement saying, "Gov. Hochul's Executive Budget makes transformative investments to make New York more affordable, more livable and safer, and she continues to work with the legislature to deliver a final budget that meets the needs of all New Yorkers."
